There are a lot of customers who currently have the old model and wonder if it is worth upgrading to the newer model. Whilst you may not want to upgrade whilst your older machine is still in good condition, there are a lot of differences between the two models that are worth taking into consideration.
The Modes
The most obvious difference between the two is that the TM5 has basic cooking functions compared to the TM6. The TM5 can only adjust the time, temperature and speed, whereas the TM6 has 19 built-in modes, as well as the basic time, temperature and speed function. At the time of writing, the current modes are scales, chop, dough, turbo, pre-clean, blend, egg boiler, kettle, warm up, thicken, rice cooker, fermentation, slow cook, sous vide, peeler, slicing, grating, sensor and spiraliser. These preloaded functions make it a lot simpler and faster to perform the tasks you need which can help reduce the time you spend cooking.
Temperature
Another difference between the two machines is the maximum temperature capability. Whilst the TM5 has a limit of 120°C (248°F), the TM6 can reach 160°C (320°F). This opens up recipes that include caramel and various other sugar stages.
WiFi and Cookidoo
The TM5 relies on the Cook-Key (sold separately) in order to access Cookidoo wirelessly, and without it, you would need to manually input the settings or rely on the limited pre-loaded recipes. The TM6, however, has WiFi capabilities, which means you can access the recipes on Cookidoo directly, without the requirement of a Cook-Key. It also allows for real-time recipe updates, so that anything you do on the Cookidoo phone app, will instantly copy onto the TM6.
Screen Size
The TM5 features a 4.3-inch touchscreen. This is considerably smaller than the TM6's 6.8-inch touchscreen, which offers faster response times and a more user-friendly interface.
Scales
While both the TM5 and TM6 have built-in scales, the TM5's scales only go up in 5-gram increments, this can lead to difficulties when trying to weigh precise ingredients, as you can be anywhere from 1g to 4g over, or under, the needed amount of an ingredient. With spices, and liquids such as oil, even a 4g difference can be far too much in a recipe. The TM6, on the other hand, has the accuracy to within 1 gram, which leads to much more precise measuring.
Pre-Clean Mode
One mode that deserves a section on it's own is the pre-clean mode. You can now use the Thermomix to clean itself, with different options depending on the type of clean you need. You can choose between Quick, Dough, Universal, Fat and Caramel, and Browning.
There is no TM7 coming any time soon since the TM6 is capable of downloading software updates via WiFi. Any mode that gets added can simply be downloaded, so there is no need for a whole new machine when adding on exciting new features. Therefore, the TM6 is here for the long haul, so consider upgrading today and exploring all the wonderful modes and features.
